This October elect a council that will reverse the shocking legacy of the last few months. This year the Tasman District Council has:
- Been investigated by the Commerce Commission over the assigning of a major contract for waste management to an Auckland-based company, without opening it for tender to locally owned CanPlan ($75,000 - $80,000 in defending the claim) More
- Been taken to the Environmental Court over a gravel dispute in Brightwater (costs not known) More
- Lost a battle at the District Court over a lease at Mapua Wharf (cost $39,480 for breach of contract and legal fees) More
- Had questions raised over its practice of using interest rate swaps to 'hedge' exposure to changing interest rates More
- 'Paid itself' $200,000 for parking after an extension to the Richmond office More
- Cost overruns for Shed 4 Complex at Mapua Wharf ($493,000) More
- Faces ongoing legal fees of between $80,000 - $90,000 to defend another dispute being investigated by the Commerce Commission (over fees for commercial activities at Port Tarakohe) More
- Despite cuts, council debt is forecast to increase from $129m to $166m by June 2017. More
